Talk on Social Impact of Mining at Goa University Dear Goanet Members, Department of Political Science, Goa University as part of its Political Economy Lecture Series is organising special lectures which will be open to all. The first in the series will be delivered by Felix Padel, Social Anthropologist and a product of Oxford University and Delhi School of Economics on the Theme Social Impact of MNC Mining in Orissaon 15th December, 2010 at 2.30 P.M at the Social Science Seminar Hall, Goa University. The lecture will be based on Padels extensive fieldwork in the Bauxite Minig belt in Orissa where he has attempted to analyse the social costs and benefits of mining in the tribal areas where often the basic interests of the marginal are subsumed under the larger interests of thenation. He is likely to adress the fundamental issue of resource cursein the region and explore the social relationships- both local and global that could give a clearer picture of such projects. The lecture has a significant bearing on the contemporary developmental debate in Goa and looks forward to participation by academics, activists, researchers and journalists. A great great grandson of Charles Darwin, Felix Padel is the author of several celebrated works like The Sacrifice Of Human Being: British Rule And The Konds Of Orissa , Oxford and Out of this earth, East Indias Adivasis, and is at present a fellow at Institute of Rural Management, Anand.
