Dear goanetters,

Do majority Karwaris want to merge with Goa? This is important if a opinion
poll is held there.

Is Karwaris relocating themselves in Goa a valid reason for merger? What about
Biharis, Oriya and Sawantwadi guys?

Karwar is HQ of Uttar Kannad district. Does the logic of merger that applies to
Karwar also holds good for Uttar Kannad? What if entire UK wants to merge with
Goa? Post such merger, what would the merged entity be named? Goa or Uttar
Kannad, a bigger part?

What if some parts of Sawantwadi also want to merge with Goa?

And where should the movement of merger originate and be fought? Goa or Karwar?

Churchill roots strongly for Greater Goa

HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, DEC 15
Notwithstanding the row kicked up by his utterances over the merger of Karwar
with Goa, PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao on Wednesday dwelt at length on the
issue, even as Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat listened attentively as his
Cabinet colleague rooted strongly for a Greater Goa.
“I have only put across my suggestion taking account the vision of the great
Konkani writer and Jnanpith award winner, Ravindra Kelekar on greater Goa. I am
not bulldozing my way with the merger of Karwar and Supa into Goa, but is only
bringing to light Kelekar’s vision for Goa and Goans to decide”, Alemao said,
while addressing Margao students at the Fatima convent school at the Science
Festival II organized by the Aquem Baixo Navelim social cultural Association.
“Today, Goa has 14 lakh population, which is increasing with 100 births every
day. Just imagine the situation in the next 60 years if the current population
trend continues in the future”, he added.
Saying that Karwar and Supa are Konkani speaking areas, he said that besides
land, these areas play host to the Kaiga nuclear plant and the Sea Bird.
Alemao raised another moot point on the migration into the state from these two
areas. “On the one hand, people are opposed to merger of these areas into Goa.
But, people from these areas are settling into the state. Can anyone stop these
people from coming and settling into Goa”, he asked.
Incidentally, the Chief Minister who shared the dais with Alemao, however,
preferred not to touch on the sensitive issue, which has kicked up a row of
sorts in Karnataka and the suggestion did not find favour with Goan leaders.
Alemao was in Karwar last week at a function organized by a group at
Sadashigad, wherein he was felicitated by the locals. In fact, the PWD Minister
was given a rousing welcome in Karwar, right from the border, with the local
group welcoming him at five different places with much fanfare.
