Now, now Rajan, if Venita Coelho had to put in as much effort to study Goa's
vibrant traditions like you did, then where would she find the time to
hobnob with Goa's chatterati, glitterati and literati? She would have to
earn a living off all those photographs of Metro Reykjavik and its environs,
while you-know-who has the luxury of treating it as a past-time.

There is a whole new cottage industry built up on trying to imitate the
neo-rich from Delhi and Daman not to mention Bumbai and Benglooroo. That
includes patronizing the Belpuriwallas from Chowpatty who have resettled in
Goa and have now gone upscale with purchases of "Portuguese-style" houses
that had not too long ago the quality of dung covered floors in Socolvaddo.

Times must change Rajan, and if that means throwing around names that
qualify as tycoons, then the rest of the population cannot be far behind. In
the Bombay of my times, transgressors of the law were quite happy to claim
family relationships with local police inspectors whose last name sounded
like your kith and kin. Now-a-days I am told, that will get you a laugh. The
stakes have been upped to Director General of Police or at least his poorer
cousin, the Inspector-General.

Roland.

ps: But of course, art & culture came to Goa only recently after
Ms V Coelho had a conversation at a dinner table with some
bhaile allegedly well known in Bharatistan & beyond. Mind you,
to be on the safe side, you have to be careful to make vague noises
about Goa having a prior "vibrant tradition" (even if you have no
clue about that tradition, or any desire to study it).
