Dr Jack de Sequeira Memorial Awards presented

The 4th Dr Jack de Sequeira Memorial Awards, 2010 was presented to
tiatrists and four sports personalities on December 27 at the Black Box,
Kala Academy, to felicitate and honour those who excelled in the field
of tiatr, culture and sports.
Awards, notwithstanding their importance or magnitude, are the greatest
tribute for an artiste. The Konkani Songit Somajik Kala Kendr, Taleigao
in its quest to unravel excellence in the field of tiatr, culture and
sports have instituted the annual Dr Jack de Sequeira Memorial Awards to
recognise the meritorious contribution of budding, current and veteran
tiatrists and sports personalities, as an ultimate measure of their
contribution to keep the unique ethos of Goan cultural identity.
The chief guest on the auspicious occasion was Admiral (Retd) Suresh
Mehta, who is the Indian High Commissioner in New Zealand. Also present
on the occasion was vice-president of the Tiatr Academy of Goa,
Roseferns, daughter of Jack Sequeira, Dr Lilia Sequeira, president of
Konkani Songit Somajik Kala Kendr, Taleigao, Santan Viegas.
80-year-old veteran, Remmy Colaco, who has acted in more than 1000
tiatrs and composed over 500 songs, won the Life Time Achievement in
Drama (Male). His song ‘Ankvar Moriechem Dukh’ was selected as the best
Konkani song by the All India Radio during the Portuguese rule. Under
the guidance of maestro Diogo Rodrigues he learnt to read and write
music and play the violin and saxophone. The Life Time Achievement for
Drama (Female) went to veteran actor, Josephine Costa Dias who won
acclaim for his performances in tiatrs by M Boyer, Artistides, John
Claro and Prem Kumar. A talented singer and has sung solos and duets
with M Boyer, Luciano Dias, C D’Silva and Jr Rod.
Tiatr Director and comedian, Miguel Jacob Carmo Luis Fernandes, aka
Prince Jacob won an award for his contributions to the Konkani drama
form –tiatr- for 25 years. A versatile writer and director with 48
tiatrs and khell-tiatrs to his credit, Prince Jacob has also translated
the Marathi drama ‘Sahi Re Sahi’ and successfully staged it as ‘Rupnnem’
in tiatr-form. A two-time recipient of the Best Actor Award instituted
by Gulab magazine and a celebrity RJ, Prince Jacob has scripted and
staged three religious tiatrs, Gõycho Saib, Sant Anton Milagrincho Sagor
and Padr Zuze Vaz – Gõycho Askari. His khell tiatr, Padri was performed
315 times in India and abroad and was later converted into a celluloid
film by the same name.
The Best Musician award went to Maestro Agnelo Dias. Mario Menezes
received the award for Best Actor for his outstanding role as a father
in the tiatr directed by him, ‘Bieman Keir’. He also won the Tiatr of
the Year for Fattlem Poi. The Best Actor Female in negative role in
Mario Menezes “Te tuka naka” went to Jessica Gomes. Best Comedian
(Male) was given to Humbert Fernandes for the role of a corrupt
minister’s PA in Prince Jacob’s “Kedna Uttolo”. Best Comedian (Female)
was given to Joana Fernandes for Mario Menezes’ Fattlem Poi while the
Best child Artiste award went to Baby Snehyya for her outstanding
singing in Rosefern’s ‘Bhurgim Ti Bhaulim Nuim’. Kamlakant Chari, who
has been designing sets for the past 40 years for both Marathi and
Konkani dramas won the award for Stage Decorater. The Up-coming Comedian
awards went to Constancio Rosario Rodrigues alias Costy for Rosefern’s
‘Bhurgim Ti Bhaulim Nuim’. Felix Gonsalves - originally from Diwar and
now settled in Wembly, United Kingdom - was awarded for his efforts in
promoting the Goan culture and language in the United Kingdom. The Dempo
Sports Club won the Team of the Year award while the Best Sportswoman of
the year went to accomplished swimmer, Talasha S Prabhu. The Best
Sportsman of the year was given to Allan Sequeira and the Coach of the
Decade was given to Armando Colaco.
