Dear Sirs
All I want for this New Year is....
I, amongst the aam admi, need my daily bread (roji) regularly during this
tourist season which is obviously missing or conveniently forgotten by virtue
of Government’s new tourism policies. Whilst the Goa Tourism Minister and
his entourage are overseas fishing for new opportunities (read tourists), it is
disheartening to observe a very lean tourist season this year upto the time of
writing, which is conspicuous from the absence of overseas tourists which till
last year were there in large numbers. This Govt. Policy of
allegedly showing discrimination with tourists of various nationalities wherein
some nations are favoured with 6 months tourist visa whilst the USSR visitors
& others (who wish to stay for 5 months and more) are given only 2 months
visa or less to a minimum of 21 days, thus not only affecting the 5-star
hotels and restaurants but also small hoteliers, restaurants, shacks, vegetable
vendors, fish vendors, kirana shops, bakers, taxis,
construction business, etc. etc.. trickling down to aam admi. Needless
to say, this domino effect has affected other allied businesses as well.
I may be wrong in coming down hard on the powers that be but is there any
solution to this dismal scenario? Yes, very much if some sense can
prevail in the Tourism Ministry which need to intervene on a war footing and
help the aam admi smile once again.
