I personally feel that Indians must not fall into this trap of the Election Commission's proposal. Why is the election commission not giving a cut out date for photo identity cards being made absolutely compulsory with no concessions? Even after complaints voters names which do not fulfill the criteria for enrollment in the electoral rolls continue to figure in Goa. Presence of corrupt politicians and criminals in politics is a fact and that needs to be changed. But on the other hand without a fool proof criminal justice system and a proper independent judicial system in place we must not dream that good and honest people will get a chance to be elected if tainted politicians are barred. However good and honest one may be, no sooner the political establishment smells that one is threat to their future, there is all possibility of false charges being framed against the person to debarr him/her from being eligible to contest the elections. Cases will linger on for 15 years until such time as you are no more capable of posing any threat. Let us not believe that all politicians having criminal charges against them are actually criminals. This does not also mean that there are no criminal politicians. The media which is in the hands of power brokers constructs and demolishes opinions to their convenience. Therefore it is important to take a very cautious and rational approach to the solutions for criminality in politics.
