The salary and conditions mentioned are absolutely disgraceful. Wonder if any Goan laborer would be attracted to the kind of compensation mentioned.
Just to put the figures in perspective, in 1982 I hired a live-in housemaid and cook from Bombay with a salary of QR 800 per month. The exchange rate for Indian rupees was lower then, but purchasing power parity was much higher than now. She worked from 7am to 7pm but her duties consisted of just looking after the children and cooking, both of which she performed admirably. The food she ate was what we ate. I paid for her yearly travel to Bombay for one month and gave her a sari for every household birthday and on occasions, we bought her gold trinkets after which, like all Indian women, she hankered. She banked every penny she earned, as she didn't need to spend. I would have thought that the gardener job offered by Roseferns in 2011 would pay at least QR 1500. But QR 400? A travesty!!! Roland.
