For the 2005 by-elections, I personally interviewed 2 probable candidates at
Longuinhos, Margao, for the Benaulim seat. Incidentally, Ivo of Longuinhos,
Margao is a Life member and a donor of GSRP. Both candidates wanted to spend
around 10 lakhs for the election. My question to them was: WHY DON'T YOU PUT
THAT MONEY IN THE FIX DEPOSIT ACCOUT OF YOUR CHILDREN? Their sad answer was:
How will people vote for me if I don't spend money? My next question was: By
spending 10 lakhs of your hard earned money, you think people will vote for
you and you will win???
The answer is still reverberating in my mind: Goans are very trust-worth
people. If they accept money from you, they will vote for you.

PS: None of them got the GSRP Ticket. One contested as an independent ,
blew his hard-earned Rs. 10 Lakhs or more and got just about 300 odd votes.
The other was wiser. He saved his hard-earned Rs. 10 lakhs.
