http://www.oheraldo.in/newscategory/Letters/13 *We need to instrospect Venan B Dias, St Estevam *We Goans blame outsiders for all the ills happening in Goa. In reality, Goans have to blame themselves, if not for all at least for most of the ills that plague Goa. Some points for introspection: (1) Goans who work abroad keep tenants who are migrants or not from the village. Why? (2) Most tiatrs portray outsiders as villains and insiders as heroes. Who invites the outsiders? (3) Many Goans want to work in European countries with Portuguese passports. You can’t always get the best of both worlds. (4) We elect 40 MLAs to rule this tiny state, then cry foul and accuse the very same people we elected. Who is to be blamed? (5) Goans leave their homeland for greener pastures, and blame the migrants for occupying Goa! It is high time that we Goans do a thorough self introspection rather than blame outsiders for everything. --
*Goans and Konkani Augustus Alphonso, Vasco/Kuwait *It is apparent that upper class Goans and those who have migrated in search of greener pastures don’t give much importance to Konkani, or ‘shy away from it’, as Fr Conceicao D’Silva recently said. They are nothing but betrayers of their motherland and mother-tongue. If Goans simply shy away from speaking and singing in Konkani just because English is an international language, they will soon be erased from the Goa map and will have to struggle for their identity in Goa itself! We all have our roots. I hope and pray that Goans will value their language. *Then and Now Willie Severes, Majorda *It was shocking to read that a newly formed committee headed by freedom fighter Flaviano Dias has demanded that roads with Portuguese names should be renamed after national heroes and freedom fighters. Right now, Goa is facing issues such as mining, mega housing projects, garbage, traffic chaos on the streets, bribes, drug lords; the list goes on… Our greedy and corrupt politicians are responsible for this mess. Flaviano should look at what is ahead, not at the past. Tackling these vital issues, rather then changing street names. That is the mark of a true freedom fighter. That is what Goans need from you.
