The problem is that largely Goans do not treat their vote as sacred. Their vote is another facility afforded by democracy to pamper their never ending greed and false egos. It is not only the poor but also educated and well off people who do not mind to take goodies from politicians. That is why one will hear affluent voters grumbling that the candidate has not visited them or send their voting cards. Therefore splashing money around and being seen becomes the criteria to get votes. The sincere and honest candidate gets shouted out. It also shows that when people do not own their village or State, this is how they behave. Like the present day migrants from other states that flock to Goa, at some point in time people also settled in properties of various landlords offering their much required skills. Many from neighbouring states taking goan names. Today all sorts of stories of one race uprooting the other and colonising areas is circulated. The sign of a real inhabitant of a village can be judged by his/her sentiments and concern for the welfare of the area. This is what ganvponn was all about. The sign of a true freedom fighter is one who is concerned over the social and political state of affairs in this State and not one that rakes irrelevant issues like Portuguese street names or visitng ships and so on. Sorry to say, that ownership of the village is diminishing with every passing day. -soter
