Chinchinim villagers oppose high rise housing projects HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, MARCH 6 Villagers of Deussua-Chinchinim in one voice on Sunday opposed high rise housing projects in the village and have served a 21-day deadline on the panchayat to take steps to collect and dispose off the waste in the village jurisdiction. The villages have also formed an Action Committee to pursue the demands and to chalk out an action plan. Agitated villagers assembled near the St Anthony Chapel, Deussua this morning and lodged their strong objection to the high rise construction proposed in the village. While asking the panchayat to hold back construction licence for the project, they said high rise building projects would invite hordes of outsiders to the village, affecting the village demography and culture. After the meeting when the ward member, Zelia Lacerda was asked to make her stand clear on the building project, the villagers adopted a resolution voicing their deep anguish and concern over the sudden stoppage and discontinuance of the collection of garbage by the panchayat, putting the people into great inconvenience. The villagers lamented that the road leading to the Orlim bridge and the by pass road from 2nd Pavlem to St Sebastian Chapel at the Dandeavaddo junction has become a garbage ground. They contended that the villagers are facing a health hazards due to environmental pollution caused by disposal of waste, including animal carcasses alongside the road. On the high rise building, the villagers objected to the issuance of construction licence to a high rise project at Batfollem-Deussua, saying the project would cause inconvenience to the resident, depriving them of basic amenities. A local resident Neves Anthony Rebello later told newsmen that the panchayat was collecting waste once in 15 days, but has since discontinued the exercise. Meanwhile, ward member Zelia Lacerda informed villagers that she has instructed the panchayat secretary to keep the high rise building project on hold and promised to stand by the people in opposing the project. The villagers maintained that the panchayat members should intimate the people on such mega projects which have a bearing on the local populace before approving the plans. Copies of the resolutions will be handed over to local MLA and Minister for Water Resources Filipe Neri Rodrigues and the panchayat body. -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1.
