MARGAO: The traditional 'Intruz' of Goa, that was synonymous with Carnival
celebrations but has now faded into oblivion, is witnessing a revival of sorts
in the rural hinterland of South Goa. Sunday saw villagers of Copelabhat and
Ambaulim in Quepem taluka, taking part in the traditional Intruz activities
with renewed vigour.

The traditional event in Ambaulim was discontinued since the last nearly 20
years. However, for the last four years, the villagers have succeeded in
reviving the Intruz "to some extent," residents said.

"This year, preparations started days in advance. Residents of Copelabhat have
been gathering at the traditional 'mandd' for the last few nights and singing
folk songs and performing folk dances to the beats of traditional drums and
musical instruments," Ambaulim-based John Fernandes, who is involved in
reviving the tradition, told TOI.

Fernandes said that the tradition which is deeply rooted in religion, was
devoid of any extravaganza that is now associated with Carnival. The Intruz was
a week-long affair that coincided with the feast of Our lady of Lourdes,
Ambaulim, he said.

"First the village elder used to light the traditional lamp, then the villagers
would sing and dance to the beats of 'kaxale'. On the last day, villagers would
move in groups-mell- from house-to-house and pass on the message of joy of the
Intruz to their village brethren," Fernandes added.
