TAG's Kantaram Competition

Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) organized a competition of singing Konkani songs-Kantaram on 20th March 2011. The competition was limited to Kantaram such as duets, duos, trios, quartets and choral songs. TAG has observed that in present day tiatrs, the singing of duets, duos, trios and quartets is on the decline. In order to revive the use of duets, duos, trios and quartets on the tiatr stage, this competition was organized.

In all about 55 singers participated in the competition which included 8 duets, 5 duos, 3 trios, 3 quartets and 5 choral songs, In the exciting competition, the following singers won the first places in different categories:-

In the duet category, the Duet entitled ‘Mhozo guneanv zalo’ sung by Roque Dias and Bushan Rodrigues won the first place. Among the Duo singers, Antonio X. Correia and Agnelo Fernandes grabbed the first place for the duo ‘Kazar’. The prize for Best Trio was bagged by Marquis Pereira, Filomena Afonso and Steffi Pereira for their trio entitled ‘Dotor, Nurse, Patient’. In the category of Quartets, Marquis Pereira, Connie Pereira, Jack D’Souza and Anthony D’Souza lifted the first prize for the quartet ‘Dhirio’ while the first prize for Choral song singing was won by Nazario Pinto and Francisco Pinto for their song ‘Bharat Mai’.

The awards consisting of cash prize and a certificate were distributed soon after the function at the hands of Francisco Noronha, President of Goa Cultural Social Centre and at the hands of judges namely Socorro de Santa Cruz, Anthony San and Mukesh Ghatwal.

Earlier Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG welcomed the gathering and atated that Konkani ‘Kantar’ i.e. duets, duos, trios, quartets must remain for posterity and hence the need to organize such activities arises. The participants were paid a nominal allowance for traveling besides providing them with refreshments.
