With electoral battles being controlled by money and muscle power the caliber and quality of the parliamentarians and legislators we elect is on the decline. Out of 543 MP’s in the current Lok Sabha 315 are crorepatis which is almost 60%. 43 of the 54 recently elected to the Rajya Sabha as MP’s are millionaires with their average declared assets over Rs 25 crore each.
The assets of an average Lok Sabha MP has grown from Rs 1.86 crore in the last house to Rs 5.33 crore which is a 200% increase. This wealth of our MP’s does not include much of the assets that exist in a colour not recognized by the income tax authorities. 150 of the current MPs have criminal cases against them with 73 of them charged with serious offences from rape to murder. We have vested our destiny in awfully wealthy bunch of people many of whom have a criminal background whose only goal is to multiply their assets while our nation sinks. Today to win an election you need to be equipped with a strong dose of Double Vitamin – M. With a lot of money backed with muscle power you are through.
