Alvernaz-Lalush Alemao NYC Trophy Football :::Indian Strikers to face Friends United in Finals ::: Kuwait: Indian Strikers will face United Friends Club (UFC) in the grand Final of the Alvernaz-Lalush Alemao 21st NYC Trophy to be played at MoH Ground, Shuwaikh on Friday, 8th April 2011. Both teams will be eyeing to inscribe their name for the first time on the Coveted trophy. In the first semi-final played last Friday, UFC beat the challenge of SkyNet Football Club by a solitary goal victory. The all important goal was scored by striker Godwin Fernandes in the 13th minute of the second half with a powerful shot from outside the D-area that hit the cross-bar before ricocheting over the goal-line (1-0). SkyNet tried hard for the equalizer till the dying minutes of the match but to no avail. UFC played the following players in the match: Martin Dias (goalkeeper), Juzer Bankoda, Hemanth Kumar, Edwin Dias, Remedio Fernandes, Godwin Fernandes, Xavier Costa, Darwin D’Cruz, Teotonio Fernandes, Mauricio Simoes, Peter D’Souza and Antonio Fernandes. In the second semifinal, Indian Strikers scrambled to victory in extra-time against tournament favorites Goa Maroons. Both the teams were locked goalless after 90 minutes of exciting football. Roy Pathrose scored the important goal to take his team in the final for the first time. Maroons, depleted by suspension and injuries, made a late surge to score level, but luck favored the Strikers. Indian Strikers managed by Robert Bernard played the following players: Noufal Man, Anthony Adima, Syed Muneer, Jineesh, Roy Pathrose, Dixon Benedict, Anthony Joseph, Jagadeesh, Biju Titus, Baiju Stellapan, Shaji Man, Nelson and Thomas Shan. NYC Trophy games are always exciting with large number of spectators turning out to watch the grand finale. This time around, much of the focus from this prestigious tournament has been stolen by the Cricket World Cup. With favorite teams and crowd pullers making early exits, it remains to be seen if the European Champions League mid-week inspires Indian spectators to come and watch some lively football. Ms. Sharon D’Costa Alemao, daughter of Goan Minister Shri Churchill Alemao, will be the chief guest at the finals. She will be accompanied by her husband Mr. Denis D’Costa. Miss Larissa Lopez, a young Goan singing sensation will also attend the event as a special invitee of NYC. Alvernaz-Lalush Memorial NYC Trophy sponsored by Churchill Brothers, Goa is Organized by Navelim under the leadership of President Agnello A. S. Fernandes. Fourteen strong teams affiliated to Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) are contesting for the prestigious, perhaps one of the most uniquely sculpt trophies worldwide, instituted by Navelim Youth Centre in the year 1993. Hosts Navelim Youth Centre have won the trophy 7 times since its inception while Maroons have won the tournament 5 times.
