TANGERIES (mini oranges like fruit) could cut heart risk - METRO, UK 7/4
Eating tangerines could reduce the risk of heart attacks, diabetes and strokes.
The latest so called "SUPERFRUIT" is also capable of staving off obesity
thanks to its cholesterol zapping plant pigments or flavonoids believed to be
10 times more effective than similar ones found in grapefruit.
While the flavonoid responsible, NOBILETIN, has so far been tested only on
mice, researchers at Canada's Uniersity of Western Ontario are optimistic about
he benefits it could hold for humans.
In a study 2 groups of mice were fed a typically Western diet high in fat and
sugar with one of the groups having Nobiletin added to their food. While l the
untreated batch became obese and showed signs of high cholesterol, blood sugar
and a fatty liver - all common causes of diabetes and heart disease - the
rodents with Nobiletin showed no such symptons. Nobiletin also protected
these animals from atheroseclerosis, the build up off plaque in arteries which
can led to a heart attack or stroke.
