* Ladies bars, touts, seedy massage parlours give Dum to Calangute-Candolim nightlife SURAJ NANDREKAR & ROZARIO ESTIBEIRO* Calangute, April 22: Three months ago, the PI of Calangute, Manjunath Desai had reacted angrily to the Herald interview of the Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes that prostitution thrives in the Calangute police station area and in the north coastal belt in general saying no prostitution exists in the area. On the eve of the just released Dum Maro Dum, based on the underbelly of sex, drugs and prostitution in Goa, the Herald team posing as tourists, hired a tourist bike and went to Calangute. What they found was more appalling than the rumours or tales from the belt. Reality does bite. The team checked and found bars which were, to use a term made infamous in Mumbai “ladies bars”, met many young men roaming the streets offering to take the team to the “disco”, an euphemism for drinking watering holes with women and rooms. Importantly, these weren’t hidden away in remote recesses of back of beyond places but in your face in the Calangute-Candolim strip Not only the prostitution racket is widely spread, the Dance Bars or the Ladies Bars as they say, after being shut down in Mumbai have shifted their base to Goa’s coastal areas. This has been happening right under the nose of the police and when some policemen saw the Herald team whom they recognized, they moved at breckneck speed immediately ordered shut down of all bars particularly – Club Rio and Club Virgin on Calangute-Candolim road, at around 11.30 pm. But prostitution is hardly contained just in the bars. It starts on the streets. -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1.
