CHURCH AND KONKANI [TONY De SA]: Many of the Parish Priests are rabidly insistent that Konkani and Konkani alone be used for all services to the point of refusing to perform services in English. I had this experience when a nephew wanted to have an English service for his nuptials. The PP refused even though it was explained that both the bride and the groom were from English speaking homes and that they and their guests were all more comfortable with an English service which would be meaningful as well as understandable. It took all kinds of pressure to get him to agree. He retaliated by getting us to arrange our own priest knowing full well that it would be difficult. http://bit.ly/jwNIf2 NEW VCDs IN KONKANI, from JoeGoaUk http://bit.ly/maTvkk DAN DRISCOLL, ON HIS LIFE AS A CATHOLIC PRIEST IN CANADA: The workload was indeed quite arduous. To suggest that it was 'too demanding' may be somewhat by way of self-justification and rationalization, but I submit that there may be an element of plain truth in it. Suffice it to say that by the time I was thirty-five years of age, after a decade of teaching half dozen forty-minute 'periods' of English and History per school day; supervising in the 'study-hall'; being 'Prefect of Discipline' for boarding students (24/7); designing and chaperoning 'Youth Club Events' -- I was becoming well-nigh 'a burnt out case'. http://bit.ly/maTvkk GABE MENEZES COMMENTING on the reporting over the arrest of minister 'Babush' Monserrate, for allegedly smuggling foreign exchange through the Mumbai airport: "The sums keep getting bigger and bigger - even in large currency notes that would be more than a suitcase! Also to make things spicier, his son's alleged rape is brought back to the fore." http://bit.ly/kf4LwF One million USD in 100 dollar Bills (Notes), according to the Fed Reserve, would weigh 10 kgs. So 10 million would be four suitcases, each weighting 25 Kg. That amount would have to go into the cargo hold. Now which stupid person would have that done? Monserate is far, far from being stupid, no? http://bit.ly/ltZ57n ROLAND FRANCIS ON GOA'S EDUCATION MINISTER: Shame on Monserrate for his criminal activities and shame on Goa for tolerating a government and a Chief Minister who includes them in his cabinet. Double shame on the people of Panjim for electing corporators supported by such criminals. Triple shame on the Christians in Goa for tolerating these corrupt co-religionists in their midst. Enough is enough. It is high time for the BJP to rule the country with Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister. High time for Parrikar to head the Goa Government. He is the only honest one who has not personally benefited from the lucre of the rotten fetid stink hole that is Goa today. In a real democracy, the opposition would not have to demand Monserrate's resignation. He would have personally handed it in IMMEDIATELY or if he didn't he would get a quiet firm message from his leader that he either do it or he would be publicly fired and all the hounds of the law put on his trail for the rest of life. http://bit.ly/k1Eowk ANITA MATHEW ON THE LANGUAGE MESS IN GOA: I think as an educationist and an English language teacher for decades that what is needed is that English which is now taught in our schools as a subject needs to be taught more as a language- which means in the primary classes more emphasis must be done to listening and speaking rather then reading and writing like we were in schools soon after independence when we learnt it as a language and not just as a subject and then suddenly in Std 5 as in Goa all the other subjects begin to be taught in English -it creates havoc for a child who has been comfortable comprehending everything in her mother tongue and then hey presto! the very language that was a subject to pass or fail becomes the medium of instruction! http://bit.ly/jqgEGC EDGAR SILVEIRA'S IMAGES FROM GOA http://www.flickr.com/photos/montrealartist/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotoart/ NISSER DIAS ON THOSE OPPOSING ENGLISH EDUCATION: The people that are opposing grant-in-aid to English medium of instruction to our children are not at all parents of school going children, but some old haggards having no standing in the society and wanting 15 minutes of fame and publicity. For example Shashikala Kadokars love for Maharashtra is well established as she along her late fathers side tried to merge Goa with Maharashtra. Today she is spent force wanting to stay in the public eye. It is also well established that she has no love lost for the Konkani and will not lift a finger for the development of the mother tongue. What is she interested is in just making Marathi popular here in Goa. Should the government even take cognizance of this anti-Goan? Then we have members of the RSS in the group opposing English as the medium of instruction at the elementary level. These are the people who had assassinated Father of the Nation Mahtatma Gandhi and were banned for many years. These are anti-national group who are also involved in terror activities in Mumbai. But they have the cheek to term parents as anti-national just because we are demanding English to be included as medium of instruction. Chief minister Digambar Kamat and Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar belong to this Hindu Fundamentalist outfit. Do we need these elements who breed and propagate hatred, ill-will, intolerance, fanaticism to tell us how to educate our children? http://bit.ly/knxXx5 SEBASTIAN BORGES, SUPPORTING KONKANI AS THE MEDIUM OF PRIMARY EDUCATION: Consider the situation of the Goan schoolchild in pre-liberation times. A Hindu child would begin his education through Marathi (Devanagari script). After completing the fourth standard he would suddenly change over to Portuguese and complete the Portuguese (Roman script) classes, Primeiro grau and Segundo grau in just two years! Please note that these are third and fourth standards (not first and second) of the Portuguese Primary stage. Please also note that these children were not even taught ABC in the Marathi school. Yet, they did not suffer any disadvantage, let alone trauma. Almost half my SSC class was Hindu, and all my Hindu classmates had passed fourth standard Marathi and at least primeiro grau in Portuguese, a sine qua non for entry into the IX standard of English high school. None of them was over two years older than me; surprisingly, one of them was six months younger (today, he is a doctor practicing in Margao). This goes to show that they did not spend more than two years in the Portuguese school. If the current claims hold even a modicum of truth, every one of them should have been traumatised twice over, but did not show any signs of this ever having occurred. http://bit.ly/kMP3M6 Get a grip, India! - VIVEK MENEZES ON INDIA'S CRICKET VICTORY http://bit.ly/mOXwBu Inaccurate census JOHN GOMES http://bit.ly/ky31zy Registration of overseas electors in the electoral rolls http://bit.ly/jV9reC The House from Zanzibar (Herald) Posted by Domnic Fernandes http://bit.ly/iKuNmE St Anthony's Parish website - Karachi Deborah Santamaria, via Rene Barreto http://bit.ly/l3xK6k Book...
