Goa celebrating feast of Holy Cross in their wards/villages/Roadside
The month of May usually remind us of Holy Cross feasts and litanies The feast is after 9 days of novenas (Litany). Each novena/Litany is jointly celebrated by 2 or more households/members depending upon the size of the membership in that ward Holy Cross Committee. The fest is celebrated by a single member or feast president. At this time, next year's president is announced (it usually goes by the order of the members list which is displayed within cross or a prominent place). The top or the first members on the list indicate the original or the first/founder members of the Holy Cross Committee. Last ones in the list are the newest members and as such the last day of novena or vesper there could be more than 5 members marked to celebrate jointly. The practice is continued for many many years and as such there could be Holy Crosses of upto 200-300 years old Earlier but not for long, there was a practice of saying Holy Mass at the Cross on the feast day which is now banned by the Church. Feast day is like any of the Novena day (same hymns) but the first litany may be sung in so called 'Basha Ladin' a sort of festive and extended version of the Litany. Litanies were sung only in Latin (Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison) but this has now changed to Konkani is last 10 years or so. Latin is still used though. On the feast day, more people join in (over 100, Novena days being around 40 including kids). After the feast ceremony or litany people walk up to the president's home for another 'Laudate' which is followed by refreshment - Soft Drinks, Beer, Pulav, Snacks etc served which has now become a sort of a trend or competition. Note: Not all feast of Holy Cross or Santa Cruz are celebrated on May 3. fixing the date is often at the discretion of the feast president but usually held before 15th of May.
