Land wars in India Medha Patkar and Arundathi Roy were fighting for people displaced by the construction of dam over a very prolonged period , but without much success The story at Nandigram and Singur in West Bengal has been bloody and loss of human life In Maharashtra farmers are on war path in connection of Nuclear plant at Jaitapur The uprising of landowners at Srikakulum Thermal power projects in Andra Pradesh In all these cases the poor are displaced of their cultivable land. But in Noida alone and specifically there is a lot of posturing by the scion of Ghandi family The unusually extra concern for these people alone is suspect The offensive is to show in poor light the Mayawati Government and nothing else The cultivable land is the only treasure of the farmers, which gives them sustenance and farming is the only profession they know The Governments are using an antiquated land acquisition act for so called development and thus crushing the hapless farmers. The so called compensation is a pittance and the affected are in no position to challenge the might of the state. There is talk now of bringing in a new land acquisition act , because now a consensus has emerged between the parties, one wonders why? Before the acquisition the displaced must be compensated at market. price their dwellings, business establishment, provide jobs, annuity and make them partners and share holders. They must be rehabilitated with alternative land sites, possible situated where their old professions will find expressions. Simply uprooting and transplanting them in hostile atmosphere will not lead to their gainful employment. It is indeed welcome even at this late stage so that the farmers are suitably rewarded for their sacrifices for the progress of the nation All these beneficial measures must be implemented before displacement and absorb the shock of trauma, Nobody is convinced that in Nodia alone there are extraneous circumstances and that in all other similar cases as aforementioned can be explained convincingly. The atrocities seem to over exaggerate and importance is attached to the personality of an individual But the blessing of this incident is that the land acquisition act is receiving the urgent attention it needs and is in focus Nelson Lopes Chinchinim 29850926276
