While we fully sympathise with the tribal cause for demanding their political
rights, we cannot celebrate the tribal hooliganism witnessed at Bali. The
tribals of Goa are not the type that descend from the jungles into the
developed cities as in many parts of this country. Such jungle conduct of arson
and killing cannot be tolerated in a civilised society like Goa known for its
peace and patience. The last time when this tribal group blocked NH17 at
Porvorim for over 6 hours we witnessed the unnecessary abuses and aggression of
the youth against the public while the police stood and watched as silent
spectators. Violence will not attract any sympathy to their cause, moreover it
will spill into retaliation from other communities who are unnecessarily put to
inconvenience. This tribal agitation seems to be instigated by politicians
with an eye on the elections. We hope the police will take the necessary action
to bring the law breakers to book and prevent hooliganism from taking hold of
people's struggles. We respect the right of the people to agitate in a
non-violent manner.
