PEARLS OF CHINCHINIM VILLAGE In the field of Education and other professions significant number of villagers have left a beaten path for the others to traverse .Dr.Selma Crasto Alliex is married to an Engineer and technocrat.She is the daughter of late MR.Sepen and Mrs .Janet Crasto,Bandfol Chinchinim.She stood first at SNDT BOMBAY M.Sc. nursing and was awarded scholarship.Further she completed Ph.D. in the same subject in AUSTRALIA and served as the Lecturer at the Curtin University ,as the Post graduate and Clinical Coordinator for two years. She is currently holding the post of Dean ,School of Nursing,Freemantle,The University of Notre Dame(UNDA) ,since the last 5 years.
Her University is the first to introduce Palliative Care as a Major Subject at the under Graduate level in Western Australia .Palliative Care is the therapy that alleviates the symptoms, but does not cure the disease. Hence it deals with end life issues ,sufferings of the patient balancing the impact on the families. It should not however to be confused with euthanasia .The course is of 3 yrs duration with grounding in Philosophy ,Theology ,Ethics ,field work of 500 hrs., case studies, communications ,pharmacology and counseling. Palliative care therefore encompasses mind, body and spiritual needs It is the ultimate strategy of pain management ,ensuring peaceful death with dignity .Her assignments involve globe tottering as the resource person .India which is still to think of this new developments and hope Goa in particular will receive her attention .It is a vertical climb for her and her brother also Ph.D. in Cancer Research USA,the other an Engineer too.
