A recent post from Nelson Lopes about the brilliant career paths of three children of the Crasto family in Chinchinim has made me wonder why no sociological studies have been done about this and other families in Goa.
I am talking about families whose parents are modestly educated (read not high school passed) and have even more modest financial resources. It is not unknown for a single child to rise above the circumstances he or she finds themselves in. But how is it that not just one of the children, but more than one of them have surmounted the stacked odds and gone on to shine in whatever academic and career pursuits they have chosen. In the Crasto family in question, not even just two but three, repeat three children had proven determination and did what it took to reach for the stars. What are the keys to success for these challenged children? Is it the constant but non-harassing encouragement of the parents for their children to excel. An excellent primary and middle school. A motivating teacher. A challenge thrown by a family critic. The sting of poverty. A relative with deep pockets who was willing to help. Or some other deeper psychology. A study of the phenom would prove an inspiration to children in other families to follow. No longer would this be left to chance and happenstance but out there would be a path for anyone in similar circumstances (and there are many) to follow scientifically proven human behavior traits.
