Varad Karekar continued his fine run to shock his higher ranked oponent Sanath Kamat and clinch the Boys Under 15 Singles title at the Dhond Memorial All Goa Major Ranking Badminton Tournament organised by Goa Badminton Association. In an exciting Finals played at the Indoor Stadium, Campal, Varad beat Sanath 21-15, 17-21, 21-19 in three tight sets to claim his maiden title.
In the Under 15 Girls Singles championship match, Anushka Kuvelkar, who had lost to Anura Prabhudesai in the last tourney, got her revenge, scoring a convincing 21-16, 21-7 straight sets win. The Boys Under 17 event turned out to be a complete one sided affair as Rahul Chandrashekar smashed his way to a 21-10, 21-6 win over Sanath Kamat who looked visibly tired and completely out of sorts. Meanwhile, the Under 13 events in both the boys and girls categories went with script as both the top seeds romped home victorious with comfortable ease. Dhruv Angle beat Mehul Jirage 21-12, 21-8 in the Sub-Junior Boys while Neha Sahakari beat Bhumika Berbetta 21-13, 21-7 in the Sub-Junior girls. The Under 15 Girls event turned out to be the match of the Tournament, an edge-of-the-seat thriller where fortunes fluctuated every minute. Top seed Anura Prabhudesai was expected to win this event after her fine performance during the last Tourney, but she was upstaged by Pranjal Chimulkar who beat her 11-21, 21-16, 21-17 in a cracker of a match to celebrate her maiden title of the season. Mr. Vijayan( Principal Secretary, Governent of Goa) was the Chief Guest and distributed the prizes along with Mr. Sandeep Nadkarni, (Chief Engineer, PWD), Mr. Ashok Menon(Director, Fire Services) and Mr. Madhav Dhond representing Dhond Memorial Trust. NIS Coaches Roy Athaide and Vinayak Kamat conducted the Championship. Gaurish Dhond, GBA Treasurer welcomed while Tournament coordinator Sandeep Heble compered and proposed the Vote of Thanks.
