There is a long but interesting article in today's Mid-Day Times about the similarities between the Maria Susairaj-Neeraj Grover-Emile Jerome case now rocking Bombay and the 1959 murder case involving Sylvia-Prem Ahuja-Kavas Nanavati that kept Bombay enraptured at that time. They call them the Love Triangles.
Both perpetrators were handsome, serving Indian Navy officers one a Keralite Christian and the other a Bombay Parsi whose partners were unfaithful in their absences. Both females were pretty women, one a Kannada film actress and the other an English beauty. Their paramours rich, swashbuckling bachelors. Commander Nanavati surrendered to then Deputy Commissioner of Police John Lobo who is mentioned in the story. I met both Nanavati and his wife in 1994 in Toronto through a Parsi friend. He was then in his 70's. A very gracious couple but I did not bring up their story. They had immigrated to Canada after his prison term. He died in 2003. Me being far too young during his heyday, I never had the opportunity of meeting John Lobo. He, a Goan whose family were based in Nagpur and CJV Miranda whose family hailed from Loutulim, were IPS officers of the 1949 batch and both went on to illustrious careers in the Police Service. John Lobo retired as Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while Miranda if I recall correctly, retired as Chief of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), both important positions at all-India levels. During their tenure, these bodies were at the peak of their credibility. They brooked no political interference and they enjoyed political trust at the highest levels. Perhaps Eugene Correia must have had contact with them while a journalist in the India Express. Eugene knew whoever was worth knowing in Bombay back in the day - police, politicians, Goa freedom fighters, sportspeople - especially if they were Goans.
