The Portuguese were in India for more than four centuries and the British stay in India was less than two centuries. A casual glance at their respective achievements revea that the :Portuguese will always be remembered for the number of churches they bestowed especially in that part of Goa they ruled for the most number of years. In this region each village can boast of a grand edifice called church with a few chapels with or without resident chaplains. They will also be remembered for the multitude of catholic priests that Goa was burdened with all these centuries in comparison with Anglican and other churches in the rest of India.
But what the British did was quite banal in comparison. Instead of making the Anglican way of life popular with the Indian masses, they went on building schools, colleges , universities, hospitals, provide water supply and drainage facilities in towns, electric power supply, build roads, railways, harbours and introduce posts and telegraphs.
