1. The biggest end user Institution of the Konkani language is the Catholic Church which conducts all rituals in Konkani (exceptions being when it is requested by the concerned faithful)
2. The institution which kept Konkani alive and kicking during colonial rule has been the Konkani tiatr. 3. The Konkani which is used in the Catholic rituals is unintelligible to most Antons, Bostiaos, Consus, Daniels, Erasmos, etc. 4. Even the Konkani which is used in the school text books presents difficulties to both students and parents. The point in making all these statements is that if Konkani is to be comprehended universally by Goans, then it should make sense to the aam aadmi. One should not have to be a Ph D, M. A. or graduate in Konkani to understand the Konkani that one reads/ hears on radio or T. V. programmes. Imagine the fate of a tiatr which uses Sanskritized or Kannadized Konkani. Given that the greatest segment of tiatr watchers is the catholic population, it has to be a flop. I know that this post is going to be a red flag to some. Let the bulls rage on ;-) -- "Tony de Sa" < tonydesa at gmail dot com>
