PANJIM:
With proformas on undertakings given by parents from all 11 talukas reaching
the education department, the picture on Medium of Instruction now seems to be
clear. Most parents whose children are studying in Diocesan Schools have opted
for English as MoI, whereas parents whose wards are studying in government
aided schools have decided to retain Marathi/Konkani as MoI, government
sources disclosed.

The approximately 140 schools run by Diocesan Society of Education (DSE)
have opted for English as MoI following undertaking from the parents,
whereas as other eight institutes have decided to maintain their old
medium subsequent to request by the parents.
After going through the undertakings submitted by the parents of all
eleven talukas , the department has come to the conclusion that about
25000 students will continue to study in their local languages -- Marathi,
  Konkani, Urdu and Kannada.
This week , the department also received reports from balance four
taluakas that revealed 4000 parents have given undertakings that they
would not like to switch on English MoI.
At some places teachers from government primary schools were at odds
when parents demanded Hindi / Kannada as a medium of instruction. " We
receive a lot of children of migrant labourers who speak in Hindi or
Kannada and so they wanted education to be imparted in their mother
tongue. However, we told them that the choice has not been given by the
government," revealed a primary school teacher who did not wish to be
identified.
About 30000 students study through government schools whereas the
number of students enrolled in Diocesan schools is as high as
30000-32000 who will now study in English medium.
