“Due weightage” for Valanka in Benaulim

GUILhERME ALMEIDA

MARGAO: The political rumblings facing the Congress over the resignation threat by the Alemao brothers seems to have finally ended on Monday evening with the PWD Minister Churchill Alemao and Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao deciding not to press for their resignations.

( Team Herald adds from Panjim: Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, maintained even till today that the brothers had only “ offered to resign”. He told Herald after returning from Delhi that Churchill and Joaquim Alemao “ offered their resignations but not in writing” and they were told by the High Command that the matter would be sorted out.”) After a meeting with party High Command functionaries, including Ahmed Patel, the political advisor to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and AICC General Secretary in charge of Goa, Jagmeet Singh Brar and MOS parliamentary affairs, Rajeev Shukla, Churchill told Herald from Delhi that he is very satisfied with the talks with High Command, adding that both he and his brother would withdraw their resignations.

“The Congress High Command has recognised the role played by the Alemao brothers in strengthening the party in Goa. And, they want us to take the party to great heights so that the Congress retains power after the coming polls”, Churchill said.

On Valanka’s disqualification from the Youth Congress polls, Alemao said that Ahmed Patel has recognised the work put in by his daughter in Benaulim.

“Patel has described Valanka as intelligent, who is working hard for the party in Benaulim. He wanted Valanka to take a top post in the Congress organisation, but Valanka told Patel that she is not hankering after posts, but assured to work for the party”, Churchill said.

When asked whether the party has assured to give a ticket for Valanka to contest from Benaulim in the coming polls, Churchill said the High Command has recognised the work put in by both Valanka and Yuri in Benaulim and Sanguem respectively. “ Twice Valanka was denied the party ticket. This time, the High Command will definitely recognise her work”, Churchill added.

When Herald asked AICC General Secretary J S Brar whether any assurances have been given to the Alemao brothers that Valanka would be given the ticket in Benaulim, he quipped “ these matters cannot be disclosed to the media. But, definitely, the party will give due weightage to Valanka’s claims for a ticket in Benaulim”. Joaquim Alemao said that he and Churchill are satisfied after the discussions with the High Command. The Congress has recognised our role in the party and have taken cognisance of the claims made by Valanka and Yuri for tickets in Benaulim and Sanguem respectively”, Joaquim said.
