I hope that the promoters of the new college will promote the "cooperative
education" concept in their curriculum. Two of my children have Masters
degrees in Mechanical Engineering. While doing their Bachelor's (Undergraduate
dgree) program, they were required after the second year of University to work
for a company engaged in Engineering work for a semester, and every alternate
semester thereafter. This gave them hands on
experience which made their degrees all the more relevant. Of course there is
a link-up between the Universities and Engineering firms. The benefit for the
University is that their graduates have gained hands on experience. For the
companies that hire the students, it is an opportunity for the company to
evaluate and hire the best talent. Both my children were offered lucrative
jobs with the companies where they had worked. Truly a win-win situation. I
hope our Institutions in Goa and in India in general will emulate this practice.
