The Kil or Comb is the tender shoot of a species of bamboo locally called ‘ellu’ which grows wild all over tropical Asia. It is quite common in the interior talukas of Goa and is used as pulp by paper mills. The bamboo has big thorns and grows in unruly clumps. This year the ellu is undergoing a phenomenon which is found only among bamboos and is called ‘mautham’. All the bamboos of the same species die at the same time throughout the world, after flowering. If you travel anywhere this year you will see dead clumps of ellu. The bamboo which normally proliferates by giving new shoots from the roots will now rejuvenate through the seed scattered by the dying bamboos. It also means that Goans may not get to eat Kil this year as there will no fresh bamboo shoots until the bamboos growing from the seed reach full growth after a year or two.
