Interesting story by Fred Noronha on the origin of the name of the Banyan tree.
Does the tree also have some religious symbolism for Hindus ? I noticed that
there often is a Hindu shrine in the shade of the Banyan trees that I have
seen. I have a Banyan tree that
traverses the property fence between me and my neighbor. I wanted to cut my
part of the tree dowm, but felt that there was some reluctance on the part of
the worker I hired to do so. I was wondering whether this had to do with a
religious belief. Perhaps our knowlegeable Hindu friends could advise.
