Subject: [Goanet] MoI : Catholics must submit to Hindu's to show they are culturally one?

UB: It only means that we should be culturally one. Just like in Kerala, you cannot distinguish people based on their dress, speech or language whether the person is a Hindu or a catholic, but in Goa, one can easily distinguish between a catholic and a Hindu.

FL: Well, in that case, either the Goan Hindus will have to stop smearing their foreheads with the red thikka or the Goan Catholics will have to start wearing them. What do you suggest??

UB: “They did not understand because you spoke in Konkani and not English”, the priest replied. It was all the more astonishing that all of these youth were Goans and did not understand or might not want to speak in Konkani. And if that was situation in 1988 what would it be now? So that kind of a situation is bound to develop according to me if English is encouraged at primary level itself in Goa."

FL: Sure Mr. Uday Bhembre. None of these Goans students understood you not because you spoke in KONKANI but because you spoke in Marathized Konkani. I too am a thorough bred GOAN. I too do not understand the Konkani that is written and sponken especially the news in Konkani by local cable TV channels. The Konkani spoken there is not my Konkani and not GOA's Konkani.
