Total population of Goans in Canada is slightly less than 40,000, of whom 90% are established in Toronto and the other 10% being mainly in Montreal and Vancouver although there are scatterings in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Halifax.
Toronto Goan population origins comprise as follows: 20 % East Africa connection 10 % Pakistan connection 3 % European (Portugal and African colonies) connection 67 % India including via Persian Gulf connection Religious background: 95% Christian 5% Hindu Largest village representation Aldona, Saligao, Parra, Assolna-Velim-Cuncolim Apex Goan Organization: Goan Overseas Association Membership about 600 families Political Representation: None. Issues facing the community: Any meaningful connection with Goa is largely severed with the second generation. There are no efforts made for political influence. The community largely rides on the coat-tails of the Indian (read Punjabi) community. There is no language bond like the Chinese, Tamil, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and various other sections of the population. There are no efforts made to enhance the financial strength of the weaker sections of the community. Each one for himself with those established earlier sitting on top of the pile. Charity directed inwards is sporadic and not in an organized manner. Village socials are well patronized. However besides eating and dancing, opportunities for rallying to Goan causes are totally absent. Good volunteerism ethic is not harnessed except for entertainment and frivolous activities.
