Union Ministry of Environment has sanctioned 2.02 crores to study impact of mining on Goa's ecology

Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has in March 2011, has sanctioned a study on Regional Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA) of Mining in Goa Region” to the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad for duration of 18 months with a budget provision of Rs.2.02 crores, Union Minister of State for Environment Mrs. Jayanti Natarajan informed Mr. Shantaram Naik in the Rajya Sabha today.

Minister further informed Mr. Naik that as per the information received from the State Government of Goa, 83 iron ore mines are in operation in Goa.

Minister also informed Mr. Naik that In compliance of the then National Environment Appellate Authority’s order dated 10.05.2010, environment clearance accorded by the Ministry of Environment & Forests to one iron ore mine in Goa, namely Pirna Iron Ore Mine (ML area 43.0 ha.) of M/s Sesa Goa Ltd. Located in Pirna and Nadora Villages in Bardez Taluk of North Goa district has been suspended by the Ministry.

She further informed that as per the information received from the State Government of Goa, Directorate of Mines and Geology in the State Government of Goa has also stopped operation in 7 (seven) iron ore mines in Goa.

Ministry of Environment & Forests has imposed a moratorium on consideration of mining proposals, for environmental clearance from the State of Goa under the provisions of the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006 till the Mineral Policy for the States is finalized and the Ministry of Environment & Forests is informed in this regard. In view of the moratorium, no mining proposal from Goa for obtaining environment clearance is pending before the Ministry of Environment & forests, she said.

Similarly, Mrs. Natarajan said that one proposal to obtain stage-II approval of the Central Government under the Forest (conservation) Act 1980 for diversion of forest land for iron ore mining in Goa are presently pending before the Ministry of Environment & Forests. Similarly, in case of one proposal received from the State Government of Goa for Stage-1 approval under the Forest (Conservation) Act 1980 for diversion of forest land for iron ore mining in Goa, the Ministry has requested the State Government to furnish essential details for its consideration.
