We need to change the pattern SAVIO PINTO (Herald Sep 16)
The echo of Anna Hazare’s clarion call to the nation has indeed reverberated across India and beyond boundaries. And now it looks that the time has come to do something about corruption. While the world has been silently watching India’s crusade against corruption, we Indians are ashamed to see how our government is toeing its line with corrupt minds. The scam after scam that has rocked India of late, has taken away the shine that India had so long achieved through some labourious policies in the past. We in Goa, have become immune to the corrupt system, given the fact that Goans lack the willpower and leaders of charisma who would lead the crusade to overthrow the forty corrupt czars responsible for the present sad state of affairs. Goa has been destroyed every nook and corner, at the cost of development. First and foremost, the Sonsodo is the monster in the making which has taken government almost a decade to put in order and has drained the exchequer to the sum which could have been used to build a dozen of playgrounds all over Goa. The crores of rupees that has been siphoned off through shoddy deals between contractors-municipal councilors and by the minister concerned speaks volume of their integrity towards the state’s welfare. Look at every market in the major towns which are in shambles. It gives an impression that the GSUDA is orphaned and is a patron whose sole aim is to make hay while the sun shines. How long can Goans tolerate such characters? Now that the heavy rains have destroyed every road across Goa, it looks India after making so much headway in technology, cannot take care of the roads that could withstand the onslaught of rains. In fact, the roads getting washed away due to incessant rains are blessings in disguise for the PWD and contractors alike. Afer the rains, the sun will shine on every contractor and PWD minister alike. It’s a matter of time when Lokayukta comes into force and people will get some relief to some extent, though it may not completely relieve the common man of harassment at the corridors of power. Having shown so much of enthusiasm toward anti-corruption crusade of late, its time for us all Goans to ponder and think ahead to bring in the change that we need so badly for the sake of Goa. It is not for Anna Hazare alone to fight this menace, but each and everyone of us should introspect and fight against corruption. Certainly Goans can bring a change provided we change the pattern of voting in the coming state assembly elections, and stop falling prey to the inducements that have started flowing.
