NUCLEAR PLANTS ARE HEATING UP The nuclear plants at Tamilnadu, Hosiapur, Jaitapur are meeting with stiff resistance. Is their concern for safety genuine ? Are there safety management, evacuation , disposal of nuclear waste in place, that the scientist and the Govt. can assure with convictions to the satisfaction of the pepole residing in the zone ? After the Chernobyl disaster the nuclear technology of the Russians is questionable. The French design of the biggest untested, nuclear plant is causing genuine apprehension The recent accidents at the French plant and earlier accident at 3 mile Island in USA are fears not addressed The Japanese are considered to be perfect, meticulous, but had not factored accurately the impact of sunami coupled with earthquake. The systems failed with disastrous consequences for the people and their property The disaster management apparatus was quickly in place and the disciplined Japanese took every thing in their stride very sportingly.The Germans have decided not to erect any more Nuclear plants in future and even review the fate of existing plants. For the last 20 years no new Nuclear plants have come up in USA The dangers of nuclear fall and radiations of nuclear wastes are fearful for human race and long term effect on health and environment. In fact USA is considered to be the greatest pollutant using fossil fuels and refusing to abide by the Kyoto agreement on emissions accepted norms The nuclear safety bill is tough on the suppliers and hence there is hesitations on their part in slowing down the construction process The demand for energy resource is crucial to development and nuclear energy is the answer, but at what costs ? The zoning and population guidelines of 1.6 km radius, then 5 kms and 16 kms are not adhered too ,strictly as agreed to by DEA and the Govt. In Tamil Nadu the population in the zones is increased mindlessly of the norms due to rehabilitation of Sunami affected people. There is no bar as to the population beyond 16 km radius if the evacuation plans are in place People`s legitimate agitations are labelled as politically motivated or inspired by the opposition parties for narrow political gains This is a blatant lie and underestimations of people being informed by media of the risks assessment They may not be scientifically inclined but are able to separate the wheat from the chaff We have seen in the attack on Bombay by the terrorists ,how long it took to react and take control In the case of Nuclear disaster , we do not have the luxury of time, as time is the essence in such incidents The population around the sites is engaged in agriculture , fishing as the main profession . The displacement without proper settlement is almost traumatic. The argument that the present population has no relevance to the actual settlements at the time of decision and implementation is degrading human life as inconsequential in value The Govt may have won the nuclear trust vote in Parliament by dubious means as it is unfolding in retrospect. The Govt has not won the vote and trust of the people living in the danger zone The huge expenditure on these projects is no justification to mow down all rational arguments of safety, rehabilitation evacuation and impact on environment, The Govt keeping the pepole in the dark promotes these projects taking people for granted and throwing safety precautions to the winds The land acquisition bill may address some issues of the affected parties, the scientist must assure the people that they are in control of the situation and can put plans of evacuations swiftly.and that all safety measures are carefully rehearsed in an emergency The 3 conditions necessitating nuclear plants are quick need for energy, closeness to the sea, hard rock surface and uninhabited human surroundings After 30 years the Chenobyl site is entomed and out of bounds for human habitation The accidents may be few but the consequences are enormous on any scale. nelson lopes chinchinim 9850926276
