What this proves to me is that people in Goa even the good intentioned and educated ones, have not understood yet the real and serious implications of mining in Goa.

I have not seen the programme, going to try and catch it tonight. The confusion in people's minds about legal and illegal mining persists! What people don't realise is that the legality or illegality of mining in Goa IS NOT THE ISSUE. The real issue is the nature of the strip mining industry - the level of irreversible destruction of nature, water resources , people's health and so on. Also people forget that there are alternatives to mining in Goa - a whole range of sustainable and green industries that are more in tune with the sensitive and fragile ecology of Goa. There are a lot of myths about the mining industry in Goa that we need to dispel.

Next November I will try to give several talks on mining in Goa to raise awareness and tell the inconvenient truths about mining in Goa. Illegality is a problem, but compared with the negative impact on nature, illegality is the least of our problems.
