Ex-CM Dr Barbosa passes away TEAM HERALD
VASCO: Former chief minister Dr Luis Proto Barbosa (84) passed away in a private hospital at Margao on Thursday morning following a brief illness.
“Dr Barbosa, who was admitted in Grace Cardiac Hospital Margao for a kidney ailment, passed away peacefully at about 9 am,” informed his son Dr Noel, while speaking to reporters.
Dr Barbosa is survived by his wife Alice Vas e Barbosa, son, Dr Noel, daughters, Nalini and Nanet, and grandchildren.
Dr Barbosa was elected from Cortalim constituency for four times and once from Loutolim constituency. He was the member of first Goa Assembly in 1963. He was later elected to the House in 1967, 1972, 1984 and 1989.
He was elected as United Goans Party MLA for three terms and Congress MLA for two terms.
The former chief minister was one of the founder members of United Goans Party and associate of Dr Jack de Sequeira.
In 1984, Dr Barbosa was the urban development minister in the cabinet led by the then chief minister Pratapsing Rane.
In 1989, he became the Speaker and in April 1990, he was elected the chief minister in the Progressive Democratic Front government.
Later, Dr Barbosa left active politics and took up horticulture in his village at Cansaulim.
The funeral of the departed leader is expected to take place in Cansaulim on Sunday.
