An exhibition on the life of a great Goan artist

Veteran artist and friend of late artist, F N Souza, Jatin Das said that
he still couldn’t imagine that Souza is not any more with us. He said
“His works are still fresh in my mind; it is almost ten years now.” He
was speaking at an interactive session with writer, Margaret Mascarenhas
during the inaugural photo exhibition on F N Souza by Ida Kar.
The exhibition features portrait pictures of F N Souza and is being held
at the Sunaparants Goa Centre of Arts, Altinho, Panaji.
Recollecting the good old days, he added, “I met him in the year 1961,
when I was still in the art college. The group he formed—Progressive
Artists’ Group was made for survival.”
Das further commented that FN Souza’s writing was like his paintings.
“He wrote like a machine gun. He was a stalwart. There were many artists
who could not stand him as he was outspoken and challenged people.”
Speaking about his style of painting, Das mentioned that F N Souza
devoted himself totally to art. “He could paint everyday. He used to
spread the canvas on the floor and paint directly from the tube, and not
from the palette” Das remembered.
He also brought out the fact that now there are hundreds of fake F N
Souza paintings, which are being exhibited at galleries. Prior to this
interaction, Conor Macklin of Grosvenor Gallery, London, who has brought
this travelling exhibition to Goa, spoke about Ida Kar and her works.
The event was well attended by artists, writers and art lovers.
