We Do Not Need Highways In Our Villages
The Authorities of The Town Planning Committee in Goa are surely bowing down
lower and lower to the money power and the might of the builders and their well
entrenched, well entertained and well compensated politicians or else, why on
earth would they try to propose highways through coastal villages of Goa ?
Our highways in most cases are not even ten meters, even though the land
acquired for highways is a lot more than that, depending on the density of the
local populace, as stipulated by the Highway Authority of India, and now the
TPC has unceremoniously proposed ten meter width roads in villages. It sure
looks like the TPC is planning, to land small aircrafts on the village roads,
in case Dabolim Airport finds itself congested due to tourist influx, so that
the aircrafts could taxi the guests straight to their star hotels.
Orlando, a resident of Carmona has been fighting a long hard battle against the
mega project of Rahejas in his backyard and he has proved with evidence that
the project has had a number of illegalities and hence illegal, one of them
being the lack of a ten meter wide access road to the project, stipulated by
the TPC, which in fact is a direct violation of the TPC's requisite. In Goa
every illegality is blessed and protected by our politicians for a price, so
too the Rahejas mega project.
The strongman from Varca, Churchill Alemao has been openly supporting the
illegalities of Rahejas, he even went to the extent of authorizing the
construction of the required access road on his own letterhead, and because of
the opposition of the people against mega housing he even termed us Goans
squealing pigs, and he further reiterated his support for the project and the
reason was that Goans would find employment as watchmen at the project, amazing
perception of one of the top members of the Congress ministry, but the people
have fought tooth and nail to stop the illegal project. It is certainly obvious
why the TPC has proposed 10 meter roads in villages.
To day to facilitate the builders and mega projects the TPC is trying to snatch
our land and property, tomorrow our beaches could be taken from us by private
hotels and with all the provisions in the present RP what keeps them from
pushing all coastal Goans away from the shore and into hinterland ? Then the
coast will be theirs to sell to the highest bidder and the CRZ has partly
started the process.
Fortunately some NGO's have come together to take up this issue with the
authorities please support them, prevention is better then cure, don't wait for
trouble to come knocking at your door to get up, but support and join the
movement to protect Goa's interest. Don't let our politicians gift our land,
properties and houses to builders and tourists. We should take care of what
belongs to us; protect your homes and your land. Participate in the meeting
organized by the NGO's and help ourselves in return.
