Both are well known sites. “The festival is conceived by actor Rahul Raj Singh and his colleagues at Magnum Opus Films, with the support of Spain consulate in Mumbai and Goa’s Tourism department” according to Mr. Ginu Joseph, Director of Chrysolite Media Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai, as quoted by IANS. India is not a surplus producer of tomatoes [Lycopersicum esculetum] which contains lycopene, a compound known to prevent heart attack. Consequently, tomatoes are sparingly used in the Indian diet although they could have done us a lot of good by preventing heart attacks if eaten fresh in salads. Hardly any tomatoes are grown in Goa, a state which happily imports this fruity vegetable from neighbouring states to meet the large demand. Hosting a “Tomatina” festival may be good for some villages in Spain that have surplus tomato production. For a high rainfall, low tomato producing region like Goa we have the traditional “Chikoll Kallo” [Mud clay festival in Ponda taluka] which could be promoted for healthy skin in the era when mud-packs are a socially accepted beauty treatment. The so-called “Sundown Tomatina Festival of Goa” can well be prohibited under the Essential Commodities Act, 1952 [ECA] or some other Act or Rules including Criminal Procedure Code until the Food Security Bill becomes an Act that can prevent wastage of food. This is far worse an act than wasteful consumption of food at wedding receptions that was once restricted under ECA, 1952. Arrogance of affluence deserves to be stopped here as much as “gated communities” with swimming pools were opposed under the now revoked Goa Regional Plan 2011. Spain still has bullfights and “Matadors” whereas even Goa’s version of bullfights [where two bulls are goaded to fight each other] are prohibited under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Apparently, Mr. Ginu Joseph does not find such details interesting enough to note. The IANS report ends thus: ‘Asked what would follow next, “Probably a bull-fight festival in February!” said Mr. Joseph smilingly. When the Government of Karnataka, a neighbouring state that supplies the bulk of the tomatoes to Goa for human consumption, did not permit such a festival in September, 2011, where is the need for the Government of Goa to turn a Nelson’s eye to the event. According to an IANS report published in the “Newspaper you can trust”, Goa’s Tourism Department and the Spanish Consulate are supporting the event. Have the Directors of Tourism and the GTDC as well as the Chairman of TTAG gone mad to permit such a thing to happen in Goa? Do Goa’s Home Minister and the Tourism Minister know what is happening and proposed to happen in their jurisdiction?? Will this need the intervention of the Federal Government and the Union Ministers for Agriculture and Civil supplies? There are just seven days in which the Goa Government and Civil Society has to get its act together to prevent this abuse.
