Thousands of mourners bid a tearful adieu to Dr Manoel Soares at Curtorim
Salcete, his home town. Dr. Soares who was fatally injured in a hit and run
case on 11/11/11 breathed his last at the Goa Medical College Hospital. He was
a very popular Surgeon in Margao and his patients, friends and family gathered
together at the St.Alex Church Curtorim for the eucharistic celebration and
burial. It may be recalled that Dr.Manoel Soares heeding to the call of his
seafearer father, left behind a lucrative career in Belgium and returned to Goa
to serve his fellow Goans. He was a pioneer, who in the eighties ushered in the
age of endoscopy in Goa where gastroenterological care was relatively unknown.
Dr. Soares with his endoscopes made it look like childs play and handled his
patients with ease and down to earth simplicity. Endoscopic surgeries were
unknown at that time and unaffordable to the common village folks. Those who
could afford had to go to costly
hospitals outside Goa for treatment.
Dr Soares seeing the poverty of his patients waived off their fees and many a
times offered free treatment. Here was a foreign returned Doctor who had to
struggle his way up to earn his MD.MS.Mch degrees and that too in the French
language, offering the best medical treatment to fellow Goans free of cost.
His return to Goa was not without problems. He had to fight the powerful
political land grabbers of his village, who wanted to usurp his ancestral
property and the lovely curtorim communidade plateau adjacent to his home and
clinic often referred to by him as the Switzerland of Goa. Such was his
determination to save Goan lives and property. Dr. Soares has touched, healed
and saved the lives of many Goans, and as a tribute to him people from far and
wide came to bid him a tearful adieu.
Curtorim has been blessed with many a great personalities in various fields.
But Dr. Manoel Soares would certainly rank as one of the greatest of them all
