Cipriano, thanks for letting us know more about Dr. Manuel Soares and what a
great person he truly was. Last two days I have been seeing his photos in the
"Obituaries" sections of Herald and was about to write about him as I knew him
(a little).

I met him in the mid or late eighties if I remember right, he had his
dispensary behind "Lily Garments" on the Milan Hotel road. I was suffering from
a bout of "gastric" problems and a friend had advised me about this new
wonderful doctor by the name Dr. Manuel Soares, so late that evening I went to
see him, to my surprise there were just two patients before me and I was
wondering, if this was as good a doctor as he was suppose to be, he should have
had lot of patients waiting for him. Later I realized that he had just started
practicing in Goa.

Any way I and my wife sat and then I noticed a middle aged lady almost in tears
and sobbing, sitting by herself, so me being me I asked her if she was okay or
if she needed any help but she said that the good doctor had asked her to wait
for him and then she went on to tell, that they were poor farmers and that her
husband was operated for a stomach tumor by a then famous doctor (withholding
name) but soon instead of her husband's health improving, it only got worse, so
she took him back to the same doctor who then refused to take him and directed
them to GMC, it was certainly bad ethics from the doctor.

Luckily, this lady met Dr. Manuel Soares and he operated on him and found that
the previous operation was botched. Dr. Manuel's operation was successful but
the man was still in critical condition. Dr Manuel Soares had done the
operation and the treatment free of cost. I was stunned by the story but I do
not know what happened to the lady and her husband after that.

Then somewhere in 2005 a close relative of mine was very serious, admitted to
Apollo Hospital in Margao, with a multi organ failure and after all the tests,
very high diabetes was diagnosed as the cause, fortunately he made it through
but few months later he had an infected foot and it just would not heal and it
got worse, he was in a very bad state, so one of his friend asked him to see Dr
Manuel Soares and he was kind enough to take him in and miraculously his foot
healed in a couple of weeks, initially looking at the state of his foot, if it
was any other hospital or doctor, it would have been amputated but Dr. Manuel
Soares was surely not any other doctor nor was he just a dedicated doctor but
he was a healer, I still remember what he told me when I asked him about my
relative's condition. He said if I told you he is not serious I would be lying
but I will assure you one thing, I will do my best to save him but I am only a
doctor not God, so you will have to do your part,
pray that I bring him out of this alive and he did bring him out alive not
once but a number of times.

Even in this times when the cost of medical treatment has sky-rocketed and good
medical treatment has become out of bound for the poor, Dr. Manuel Soares still
treated the poor people free of cost and that shows his love for his profession
and for humanity.

I still remember my first ride up the small hillock to Dr Manuel's hospital,
twisting and turning but serene and green all round his hospital, I even asked
him for a few of his beautiful baby plants, he surely had a thing for nature
and it's beauty, which certainly explains for the location of his abode and his
hospital.

Such good doctors are hard to find and Dr. Manuel Soares was not just an
exceptionally good doctor but also a great human being, generous and
charitable. I can only say humanity has lost a very valuable exponent. May his
soul, rest in peace with his Maker. Sayonara Dr. Manuel Soares we will miss you.
