THE PROBLEM of congestion on village roads is small and needs a simple solution: one-way roads. We then need to link up as many one-way roads so the traffic can move smoothly. Only in desperation should we opt for a wider road.

The Goan village has a unique ambience and the narrow meandering roads are part of its charm. If we widen every road, we will simply dismember our villages and turn them into cities. Wide roads in a village, simply put, are a way of laying the infrastructure for a township with a lower standard of living. Air pollution, crowds, noise, garbage problems, and all the evils of town and city life will soon haunt us. Land prices will double and only the super rich will be able to afford real houses, as is the case in Mumbai. Ten metre roads will bring in busloads of low-end tourists, especially in the costal areas, who will descend in swarms in search of a place to eat their tiffin lunches. Do we want our villages and village beaches to resemble Chowpatti? All is not lost yet although a few villages are already towns today and there is no turning back the clock! Villages which are villages not only in name but in reality have a future, but let us not forget it is in the hands of us villagers. It is for us villagers to decide if we want our villages to be bequeathed to our children the way they are now or not!
