Nitish wins, Ivana, Riya draw in 9th round at World youth Chess Championship, 2011, Brazil

WFM Ivana Furtado and WCM Riya Savant drew their ninth and final round while CM Nitish Belurkar won the ninth round in the World Youth Chess Championship 2011, held at Gioania, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Ivana Furtado drew with Oreshku Mariya of USA in a hard fought battle while Riya Savant gave Zhou Qiyu of Canada a very tough fight before accepting a draw. Nitish Belurkar was locked in an intense duel with Zhalmakhanov Ramazan of Khazhakastan and finally Nitish outwitted his opponent to win the game. All three scored six points and for them it was a case of so near yet so far as they fell short of one point to be in the medals tally.

The World Youth Chess Championship concluded with a grand closing ceremony with India bagging 5 medals. Altogether about 1200 participants from 25 countries around the world participated in the tournament. Ivana Furtado finished 13th, while Geno brand ambassadors, Riya Savant and Nitish Belurkar finished 14th in under 12 girls category and 24th in under 10 open category respectively. Riya Savant leaves for Singapore Open Chess Championship in December while Nitish Belurkar leaves for Hungary to play in the Swiss and Czech Open Chess Championships in January 2012.
