I believe the official were either misquoted or misinterpreted. They are in a struggle to survive, and are more likely to ask India for assistance, rather than damage the amity of several decades. Little justifies the provocation, and the story is not credible. eric. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New Delhi, Dec. 7: An external affairs ministry spokesman said here today that recognition of Portuguese Sovereignty over Goa and other Portuguese colonial possessions in India was “completely unacceptable to us.” The spokesman was commenting on the statement of the Portuguese foreign minister at Lisbon to the effect that Portugal would be willing to give information about conditions in Goa to India and also discuss its future relationship because of contiguity provided Portuguese sovereignty over Goa was recognised. Commenting on the lengthy statement of the Portuguese foreign minister, the Indian external affairs ministry spokesman said, “as regards Portuguese sovereignty it is completely unacceptable to us. We consider Goa and other Portuguese colonial pockets in India are an integral part of India.” “The Portuguese offer to give information about conditions in Goa,” the spokesman continued, “makes very strange reading indeed in the light of their consistent defiance of the United Nations in giving information about non-self-governing territories forcibly occupied by them, specially Goa and other Portuguese colonies in India.” The spokesman pointed out that the last such resolution against Portugal was passed by the 15th General Assembly of the United Nations in 1960. — PTI http://www.deccanchronicle.com/dc50/lisbon’s-rule-over-goa-unacceptable-178 -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
