Citizens of Goa staged a SILENT protest at the Inaugural function of the International Conference on 'Goa 1961 and Beyond' held at the University of Goa today, 18 Dec 2011 to mark the celebrations of 50 years of Goa's so called Liberation from the Portuguese. In all around 20 citizens of Goa wearing black armbands and collar plaques occupied prominent middle row seats of the auditorium and ga...ve standing applause to the various speakers, not for their delivery but to attract attention of the audience. This was noted very well by all and sundry. Later the members of the protest group mixed with the delegates during refreshments and exchanged views and answered questions. The protest was about not having been liberated at all but of one weaker colonial power having been replaced by a stronger colonial power. This fact was admitted by the Director or the Combra University, Portugal himself (photo) when he was talking about colonialism in general and observed that people get to be made fools of in most cases. His was a very eloquent address and was much appreciated by the protesting group. The Director was so happy to note the protest that he took his picture along with the protestors in the auditorium before dispersing after the inaugural session for refreshments.
