Sharmad Mahajan, Goa’s top Junior shuttler, emerged double crown winner at the SAG State Badminton championship organized by Goa Badminton Association in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa. In the season ending championship finals played at Indoor Stadium, Campal, Panaji, Sharmad emerged triumphant in the Under 19 Boys singles and doubles event. In the singles, Sharmad registered a convincing 21-14, 21-19 win over Pranav Silimkhan, though his young opponent did give him a few jitters in the second set. Later, Sharmad teamed with Aniket Shenai to beat Shashank Desai and Chinmay Kamat 21-14, 21-13.
Pranjal Chimulkar ended the season on a high with a smashing 21-11, 21-8 win over Ananya Kulkarni to emerge Girls Under 17 Singles champion. The under 17 Boys finals was a hard fought battle between Pranav Silmkhan and Chinmay Kamat. Chinmay won the first set 21-18 but the top seed Pranav rallied well to win the next two sets 21-13, 21-15. Sanath Kamat emerged winner in the Under 15 Boys singles event beating Varad Karekar 21-11, 15-21, 21-14 in a pulsating contest. Floyd Araujo, the Mens top seed, was given a slight scare by former State Champion Pankaj Naik before pulling off a thrilling 21-18, 16-21, 21-10 victory in the Mens singles category. In the Mens doubles, much was expected of Sunny Sawant and Sharmad Mahajan after they had knocked out top seeds Floyd Araujo and Navneet Nasnodkar in the semis, but the Kanji brothers Sandip and Kamlesh completely outplayed them, winning with a comprehensive 21-13, 21-10 score line. Meanwhile, Pradhosh Silimkhan stunned the Veterans top seed Vaman Fallary to emerge winner in the Veterans 45 plus singles category. Vaman, who was unbeatable the last 2 seasons lost 16-21, 21-13, 15-21 in an epic battle. There was consolation for Vaman as he won the Veterans 45 plus doubles event partnering Cancio Mascarenhas. Their opponents Pradosh Silimkhan and Ashok Menon conceded the game with Pradosh suffering from severe cramps during the match. Leo Velho, Mansi Gude, Ashrum Gautam and Varun Vernekar emerged as promising players of the tournament. The Tournament was conducted by NIS Coaches Roy Athaide and Vinayak Kamat. Later, prizes were distributed by Chief Guest Smt Bharati Heble(Councillor, CCP), Guest of Honour Sarfraz Sheikh (President, Panjim Badminton Club) and Baburao Naik (Vice-President, GBA).
