Sydney was a dentist, and a dear friend. He was fifty five. The family
had moved to the US from Bombay in 1975. Like many others
of the small Chinese community, they lived in the dense Bellasis Road district
that was riddled with store front offices of
Chinese dentists and assorted quacks: think and poorly sterilized instruments
and little precaution.
The first to die of Hep B/C complications was his father, followed by his
brother Cliff at forty five. The mother was to follow, with the same
affliction. She was raised in Bihar, and had raised all six grandchildren in
NY to be fluent in both Hindi as well as Cantonese. The family Buddhist altar
used to feature Hindu and Christian icons.
I have discussed the issue in the past. We need to be cautious with the
services of razor wielding barbers, and not quite qualified
medical practitioners.
